You will have most likely heard about the recent major computer security issues called “Meltdown” and “Spectre”. These are massive vulnerabilities affecting nearly every Operating System and device. A malicious program can exploit these vulnerabilities to get hold of sensitive information such as passwords in the memory of other running programs, so its important to make sure your computers are protected.
The easiest way to check if you are protected
The easiest way to check if you are protected download the InSpectre tool here and run it. It’s very simple to use and will tell you whether you are vulnerable to both the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities.
When you have run the tool, it’ll show you the vulnerability status of your computer, you can also scroll down for some more in-depth information:
- Vulnerable to Meltdown – if it says “YES!” then you’ll need to update your computer with a patch from Microsoft, the easiest way to do this is to run Windows Update by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on a Windows 10 computer or Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update on aWindows 7 computer.
- Vulnerable to Spectre – if it says “YES! then you’ll need to go to your computer manufacturers website, locate and install the UEFI firmware or BIOS update for your particular model. We’d recommend you get a professional to do this!
